Parenting Coach
Retired Holistic Pediatrician
CARL IVEY, MD
  Campbell River BC, Canada

Dr. Ivey & Granddaughters
Carl Ivey, MD, after practicing pediatrics for over 30 years, retired from actively practicing pediatrics in December 2004. Since that time, he has launched a new career as a full-time parenting coach, motivational speaker, educational consultant to schools and an advocate for healthy nutrition. Being no longer limited by the confines of conventional medicine, he is now free to pursue with unbridled enthusiasm his true passions of providing effective parenting advice, promoting preventive health and wellness for kids and their parents, and inspiring people of all ages to achieve their full human potentials. It is most ironic that Dr. Ivey was studying to become a teacher before deciding to become a doctor, and that the word "doctor" comes from the Latin word "docere", which means "to teach." Dr. Ivey is committed to providing parents with effective parenting strategies and healthy nutrition information in order to enable parents to raise emotionally healthy, physically fit and spiritually empowered children and teens.

Dr. Ivey is U.S. Board Certified in Pediatrics and Holistic Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is an active member of the American Holistic Medical Association. Dr. Ivey practiced Pediatrics for over 20 years in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana areas, and for the last 10 years in various parts of the United States

before moving to British Columbia, Canada.  While in practice, Dr. Ivey specialized in treating ADD  (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and dealing with child & teen behavior problems. Dr. Ivey pursued premedical studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago, medical studies at the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, a pediatric-emphasis internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and his Pediatric Residency at Michael Reese Hospital also in Chicago.  He has continued his professional growth by regularly attending medical conferences sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and holistic medical conferences sponsored by the American Holistic Medical Association in order to expand and deepen his understanding of the interconnections between parenting, self-esteem, behavior, nutrition, learning, mental and physical health, achievement, happiness and success.

During his long career as a practicing pediatrician, Dr. Ivey often realized that a sense of humor and laughter were priceless, both personally and professionally. It was impossible for him not to notice that laughter made both himself and his patients and their parents feel good! Affectionately referred to as the "funny doctor" and the "silly doctor" by many of his pediatric patients, Dr. Ivey was not at all surprised when he discovered that the word "silly" comes from the old English word "selig", which means "happiness and long life."

Dr. Ivey has appeared on numerous live, call-in radio talk shows and cable television programs. In addition, he has had a number of articles on parenting published in newspapers in various parts of the United States. His article, "Effective Discipline: Gain Without Pain," appeared in Contemporary Pediatrics, May 1991. He is currently writing a book entitled,"Raising Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Empowered Children and Teens: Stop Punishing and Start Disciplining." Dr. Ivey is also a pianist with a passion for classical music, most especially the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. He is the father of two adult daughters and has four granddaughters, the youngest being born on March 27, 2007. Dr. Ivey lives with his wife in Campbell River, British Columbia.
